What is a VIN?

The VIN (Vehicle identification number) is a unique sequence of alpha numeric characters used to identify all vehicles that are used on the public roads. All modern vehicles have a 17 character vehicle identification number stamped onto the chassis or body upon manufacture. This unique identification number relates specifically to the vehicle and is used to understand the original identity and build specifications.

Where can I find the VIN?

  • The VIN can be located in a few places on your vehicle.
  • The 17 character VIN will be stamped on to the chassis or body; however the location will vary, so it is important to check these details with the original manufacturer.
  • The vehicle will also have a chassis plate riveted to the chassis or body that contains the 17 character VIN. The chassis plate may also contain details regarding other minor and primary features of the vehicle. The location of the chassis plate will vary so it is important to check these details with the original manufacturer.
  • A 17 character VIN is often located at the base of the windscreen.
  • Some vehicles have the VIN etched on to the windows and windscreen as a theft deterrent.
  • The VIN can also be found within the original service book and if the vehicle is 3 years old, it will be present on any MOT/NCT certificates that have been issued.

What to look for upon inspection:

  1. Ensure that the stamped VIN is located in the correct position as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
  2. All of the VIN characters stamped on the chassis or body should be legible and the stamping of the characters should be consistent. Suspect any characters that appear deformed or have been tampered with in anyway.
  3. When checking the VIN on the chassis or body, visually check the immediate surrounding area to ensure that there are not any signs of damage or repair. If accessible, carry out the same check to the underside of where the VIN is located.
  4. Ensure that the chassis plate used on the vehicle looks original and suspect if it looks like it has been tampered with in any way.
  5. All of the vehicle identification numbers located on the vehicle must be identical to the original documentation issued by the vehicle licensing authority.
